Effective Job Search

Headline Principles of Effective Job Search

Like everything in life, there are things you can control and there are things that you can't. Keeping a focus on your activity, applying yourself to the job of securing employment with energy and enthusiasm, making sure you have and are using an effective toolkit like CVPartner, are all within your control. Sometimes, though, you may feel frustrated and demotivated if you don't feel you are making progress, even feeling there is no point continuing to search. This is where your own level of personal motivation and resilience both can and needs to keep you going. So, something to plant into your thinking process early in your job search, is that whatever your profession or occupation when you either lost or decided to change your job, you now need to be a salesperson! But why?

Firstly, for those of you who equate the word 'salesperson' with the over-pushy, insincere cold callers who would do anything for a deal, just pause and think again for a moment. Who are the most successful sales people you have known, and what it was about them that made them successful? You could even start to make a list of their personal characteristics. More often than not, successful sales people are:

  • Highly motivated
  • Proactive
  • Confident
  • Thorough
  • Focussed
  • Resilient
  • Persuasive

Additionally, nearly every successful salesperson, however many of the above traits they have, will put 'activity' high up on their list of priorities when it comes to planning how they will meet their targets - mainly because that is the part of their process they can control, but also because they know that high levels of activity (i.e. planning, prospecting, networking, gaining referrals, appointments and most importantly follow up), will improve their chances of success by a considerable margin. It is intelligent activity they will undertake; 10 well-researched and pre-planned sales calls will nearly always be more effective than 100 not researched and unplanned calls! In other words - they are working smart, not just working hard.

So bringing this back to you, this means that proactivity is needed over and above reacting to job advertisements. A key to more effective job search is time spent planning and researching a target market, to identify either agencies or employers who might have an as yet unadvertised need, filled by you.
