Friday October 30 2009. Increased Production thanks to Nissan Micra
The scrappage scheme has provided a significant boost to the production of the Nissan Micra at the Sunderland plant, and the company also reports a 15% growth in the Qashqai.
Trevor Mann, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing at Nissan Europe, says: "The scrappage incentives have brought sales that wouldn't normally have been generated with Micra proving the most popular. Both the Government's and Nissan's own schemes have stimulated the market and allowed us to protect jobs at the plant and in the dealer network."
He went on to comment: "The boost to production has been very welcome, but we need to remain cautious as scrappage incentives are scheduled to come to an end shortly. We will continue to monitor the market and adjust our production plan accordingly."
Looking to the future, the Sunderland factory has also been given the opportunity to produce batteries for electric cars. For Nissan dealership-based jobs visit Nissan Dealer Recruitment.

Friday October 9 2009. Biffa announces plans for energy recovery facility in Hertfordshire
Biffa have announced plans to develop a state-of-the-art recovery facility near Ware in Hertfordshire. The plant would utilise waste left over after recycling and composting which would otherwise go to landfill. Capable of handling 400,000 tonnes per annum of non-hazardous waste, the facility could produce 34 megawatts of electricity - which is enough to power 68,000 homes.
Simon Allin - Biffa's Development Director - says: 'If we are successful with our energy recovery facility which could become operational by 2014 - this will mean much less waste going to landfill and, isntead of being buried, being used to produce electricity.' He went on to say: 'Our proposal is not directed at the Hertfordshire domestic refuse contract for which other organisations are currently tendering. Our plans are to deal with non-hazardous waste produced by the thousands of business, shops and organisations in the area.'
Friday October 9 2009. 'Green shoots' appearing on permanent and temporary employment
A report published this week by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) & KPMG has indicated there was a slight increase in permanent and temporary staff employment during September. This is the second straight month that small rises have been tracked, and this combined with the growth of candidate availability easing, could suggest the most intense phase of job-shedding has passed.
Bernard Brown, KPMG Partner & Head of Business Services comments: 'The latest report brings more encouraging news for the UK jobs market. After declining for 16 months in a row, the number of people placed in permanent jobs has risen for the second consecutive month. This provides further evidence that the bottom of the economic cycle has been reached.'
